The West Elk Mountains are located in the Gunnison River Basin in west-central Colorado. They are roughly bounded on the north by the North Fork of the Gunnison River, on the east by the East River, and on the south and west by the main stem Gunnison River. Peak elevations are typically in the 11,000-13,000 foot range. The town of Crested Butte Is located in the northeastern part of the area. I have had the good fortune to be able to photograph the area during the height of fall color for many years.
