My Journey

John Denver said it best in Rocky Mountain High (1972)…

He was born in the summer of his 27th year

Coming home to a place he'd never been before

He left yesterday behind him, you might say he was born again

You might say he found a key for every door

For me, it was my 29th year. I had moved my family to Denver in 1971 (never having been there) for a job with the USGS. Seven years later, I would leave. But, after having visited nearly every part of the state during my time there, Colorado felt more like home than anywhere else I would ever live. I knew I would return. It took more than 50 years, but it finally happened.

The photographic part of my journey began in earnest in 1973, when a friend and I trekked to the summit of Mt Elbert. Although Mt Elbert is Colorado’s highest peak, it’s not a terribly difficult hike if you’re in good physical condition. We were not, but we managed to get up and down the mountain in the same day without incident…one of the highlights of my life. My early attempts at photography, during that trek with a used SLR, along with the documentary photos I took as part of my job, taught me the basics and led to a true passion for and a life-long interest in photography.  I hope you enjoy my interpretations of the many amazing places I have had the opportunity to photograph.
